PDF — Portable Document Format

Document

PDF compression re-samples embedded images, removes redundant streams, and subsets fonts to produce a much smaller document without altering its layout or typography. Reducing a PDF can cut its size by 50–90%, making it practical to email multi-page reports, share scanned forms, or archive legal documents.

Technical details

PDF compression targets multiple resources: embedded JPEG/PNG images are re-encoded at lower quality; duplicate objects and streams are deduplicated; unused fonts and resources are removed; and cross-reference tables are rebuilt. Ghostscript presets range from /screen (72 dpi) to /prepress (300 dpi).

Frequently asked questions

Does compressing PDF reduce quality?

PDF compression reduces embedded image resolution and removes redundant streams, which can slightly soften images inside the document. Text and vector elements remain perfectly sharp. Use the "high quality" preset if the PDF contains important graphics.

How much can I reduce a PDF file?

PDF files can typically be reduced by up to 90% depending on the source content and the compression level you select. Files with lots of detail compress less than simpler content.

Is my PDF file safe when I compress it?

Yes. Your file is uploaded over an encrypted HTTPS connection, processed on our secure servers, and permanently deleted immediately after you download the compressed output. We never store or share your files.

What tool is used to compress PDF files?

We use Ghostscript — a battle-tested, open-source compression engine trusted by developers worldwide — to process PDF files reliably and efficiently.
