AVIF — AV1 Image File Format

Image

AVIF compression adjusts the AV1 quantizer to push file sizes even further below WebP and JPEG while maintaining stunning visual quality. Compressing AVIF images makes next-generation web experiences faster, especially on high-resolution displays serving HDR photography.

Common use cases

  • Reducing AVIF hero images for ultra-fast web page loads
  • Compressing HDR content for streaming platforms
  • Shrinking AVIF thumbnails for news feeds and galleries
  • Optimizing AVIF assets in progressive web applications

Advantages

  • Best-in-class compression ratio among all image formats
  • Excellent HDR and wide color gamut fidelity after compression
  • Open and royalty-free format with no licensing concerns
  • Growing browser support including Chrome, Firefox, and Safari

Technical details

AVIF uses the AV1 intra-frame codec. The quantizer (cq-level) ranges from 0 (lossless) to 63 (maximum compression). The encoder also controls speed vs. efficiency trade-offs via the effort/cpu-used parameter. 12-bit color and HDR are supported natively.

Frequently asked questions

Does compressing AVIF reduce quality?

For image compression, quality depends on the setting you choose. At 75–85% quality the difference is barely perceptible. For lossless formats like PNG, compression is entirely lossless — no pixel data is discarded.

How much can I reduce a AVIF file?

AVIF files can typically be reduced by up to 75% depending on the source content and the compression level you select. Files with lots of detail compress less than simpler content.

Is my AVIF file safe when I compress it?

Yes. Your file is uploaded over an encrypted HTTPS connection, processed on our secure servers, and permanently deleted immediately after you download the compressed output. We never store or share your files.

What tool is used to compress AVIF files?

We use Pillow — a battle-tested, open-source compression engine trusted by developers worldwide — to process AVIF files reliably and efficiently.
