MP4 — MPEG-4 Part 14

Video

MP4 compression re-encodes the video stream with a higher CRF value or lower bitrate using H.264 or H.265, slashing file sizes by 40–80% while keeping the video visually sharp on screens of any size. Smaller MP4 files are essential for social media uploads, email sharing, and mobile streaming.

Common use cases

  • Reducing video file sizes before uploading to Instagram or TikTok
  • Shrinking MP4 recordings for faster email and WeTransfer sharing
  • Compressing product demo videos for embedding on a website
  • Optimizing training videos for LMS platforms with storage limits

Advantages

  • Huge size reduction (40–80%) while maintaining watchable quality
  • H.265 encoding halves the bitrate of H.264 at the same visual quality
  • Universal playback support on every device and platform
  • Adjustable compression level to balance quality and storage

Technical details

MP4 uses H.264 (AVC) or H.265 (HEVC) video codecs with AAC audio. Compression is controlled by the CRF (Constant Rate Factor) in FFmpeg: values 18–28 for H.264 and 24–30 for H.265. Higher CRF = smaller file = lower quality. Two-pass encoding can target a specific file size.

Frequently asked questions

Does compressing MP4 reduce quality?

For video and audio, compression means re-encoding at a lower bitrate. Using our recommended medium level strikes a balance between file size and perceptible quality — the output is enjoyable on most screens and speakers.

How much can I reduce a MP4 file?

MP4 files can typically be reduced by up to 80% depending on the source content and the compression level you select. Files with lots of detail compress less than simpler content.

Is my MP4 file safe when I compress it?

Yes. Your file is uploaded over an encrypted HTTPS connection, processed on our secure servers, and permanently deleted immediately after you download the compressed output. We never store or share your files.

What tool is used to compress MP4 files?

We use FFmpeg — a battle-tested, open-source compression engine trusted by developers worldwide — to process MP4 files reliably and efficiently.
